Every Step Counts already has many significant accomplishments:
- ESC was one of twenty-five finalists chosen by Community Action to Prevent Chronic Diseases (CAPCoD), a project of the Oxford Health Alliance, to be featured in their March 2005 conference at
Yale
University. The program highlights pioneering projects from around the world that address multiple risk factors, are sustainable and innovative, and build on current knowledge and local data.
- ESC students have written to their political representatives to support legislation that mandates healthier food and physical education policies.
- ESC students have successfully lobbied City Fresh, the school’s food supplier, to offer a healthier menu at the school. The changes introduced include: inclusion of low fat milk, greater availability of fruit, removal of junk food from the school, removal of fried foods, inclusion of vegetables with all meals, and removal of high fat pastries from breakfast.
- Students have responded very favorably to ESC’s efforts to connect with them through socially and culturally relevant programming. To illustrate, in Phase I, they embraced the opportunity to adopt music and dances from “The Wiz” to convey messages about nutrition and fitness. In Phase II, they created a series of television “commercials” based on the marketing techniques of familiar products.
