Do you have any lingering
effects of the arrhythmia?
No. Occasionally when I’m
resting I’ll experience an episode, but now I know it is nothing serious
and has more to do with my low resting heart rate.
Did you run in high school?
College?
No and No. Although I was always
involved in athletics (mostly basketball) through HS (Archbishop Williams
HS, Braintree, MA Class of ‘82) and college (Merrimack College, Andover,
MA Class of ‘86) it wasn't until I was out of college that I started
running.
My wife Mary got me into running. It started with running groups
at work, followed by local races and then a goal of running the Boston
Marathon. Mary and I ran our first marathon (Marine Corp ‘89) and
qualified to run our first Boston in ‘90.
What got you into
“ultra running?”
After many years of running
and racing marathons, I suffered a knee injury (IT band) that caused
me to take some time off. During that time a good friend (Bob Treadwell,
Temple, NH) invited me to run the trails near his house; saying it would
be easier on the knees and more “interesting” than the roads. Looking
to get back to some kind of running I took him up on the invitation
and was immediately hooked on trail running.
It's much more adventuresome
than road running and time seems to go by so much quicker when you’re
running through a more natural setting. It was this later aspect that
lead to the length of the runs increasing from 1-2 hours to 3-4+ hours.
From there the competitive juices kicked in again and I found the longer
the trail race was, the better I did.
How long have you been
ultra running?
8 years. I ran my first
official ultra race in 1998.
