Click here to to watch Chet Curtis' interview with Bill Nawn and Dr. Craig Vinch on NECN about heart health and the Double Marathon in 2007.

If there were only one thing people remembered about this run, what would you want it to be?

Be appreciative of the health you have and educate yourself on the risk factors of heart disease. Then take action to improve your lifestyle habits (nutrition and exercise) and heart health because it’s more than your life that depends on it.

Why do you do this (running 52.4 miles)? Are you crazy?

Maybe (crazy), but a quick answer is “because I still can.” That may sound flip but running has become of way of continually celebrating the fact that I can still move at all. When I was 15, I broke my neck in a freak high school gym class accident and was nearly paralyzed from the neck down. I recovered from that, but not without a few external, as well as internal, reminders that have provided me with an appreciative attitude about mobility. And what better way to express that than running?

I have since come to believe two things about my running: 1) I have some inherent physiological attributes that lend themselves to long(er) distance running--more slow than fast twitch muscle fibers and a mental toughness to stay focused, and 2) I have had the opportunity to further develop those gifts to the point of being pretty good at something not many people can do. But beyond that and perhaps more important, I believe a person should use the talents they have to help others and that's really where the idea for my “ultra fund” runs started.

The healing approach at the Lown Center was very sensitive to the importance of running in my life.

Have you done this before?

Yes, 5 times before.
